If you want to get a leg up on the competition in MultiVersus, this guide will give you all the info you need to make a strong first impression.

There is a lot going on when it comes to rifts. They have their own equipment, they feature multiple reward types, and they are packed with unique content. We will help demystify this mode and tell you everything you need to know in order to make the most of it.

Rifts Overview

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (2)

The gist of the Rift is that this is a single player mode which features a procession of missions. More often than not, these missions are a round of MuliVersus. These matches can be 1v1, 2v2, or 1v2. However, there are also a number of minigames present in the Rift mode. You will be aided in your quest by gems. These gems upgrade your stats and give you a variety of abilities.

Different Rifts open up over time. So, as of the time of writing this guide, there are two available rifts. However, the Jason Vs. Multiverse Rift will be unlocking in the very near future.

Additional rifts will make things like unlocking Agent Smith considerably easier, as you will be able to polish off your boss battle wins without having to delve into the hardest difficulties.

What Are Gems?

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (3)

Before we get started, we should dig into gems. Gems are used exclusively in the Rifts mode to modify your stats, and improve your abilites, and increase your chances of victory. Different Rifts will require you to use a specific type of gem.

As for where you will get these gems, you'll acquire them by finishing matches in the Rifts mode. Look for the matches that have a "Daily Reward" associated with them. Those are the ones that will give you new gems.

Gems will level up after completing a new Rift mission. That includes missions where you play a minigame instead of fighting an opponent. Which gems level up is randomly determined. It has nothing to do with what you have equipped. However, they will always be of the same type as the match you just fought.

Rift Difficulty Settings

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (4)

One of the more important elements to consider is that each difficulty setting has its own rewards linked to it. That means the difficulty setting isn't just about modifying the challenge based on your own preferences. Ideally, if you want to get the most out of each rift, you will complete them on multiple difficulty settings.

While all Rifts will provide you with rewards, Daily Rewards will be tied to a specific rift. You can tell which one as it is clearly marked on the Rift selection screen.

Initially, you will only be able to select "Easy" and "Experienced", but as you level up your gems you will unlock more difficulty options. Additionally, the "Insanity" difficulty setting is present on the menu, but currently unavailable. We assume it will be added in a future update.

In order to unlock the crushing difficulty, you will need to fill the reward bars in the lower difficulties.

Minigames In The Rift

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (5)

There are a number of minigames in the Rift mode. While these are relatively self-explanatory, we'll give you a quick rundown of each and give you a hint or two...

Gold Zeppelin

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (6)

In this game you simply need to hit the giant jack-in-a-boxes while the Zeppelin is above them. This will cause a boxing glove to spring out and strike it. Light attacks won't do it, you need to use harding hitting, knockback-style attacks. Harder hitting characters, like Jason, will make this mode easier. Make sure to get the Zeppelin at least twice, once as it is coming and another time as it is going.

Your dash attack is an incredibly handy move to use here!

Target Breaker

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (7)

This is a race to break targets and collect coins. Obviously, your best bet for winning big here is to choose a character with great air mobility. Iron Giant is a fantastic pick and makes this mode rather easy, as he has jet propulsion. Similarly, Superman, and his excellent flying abilities, is a great pick. Just watch out for those exploding barrels!

Joker's Wild

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (8)

This is basically just a classic example of the shell game. Keep track of the three Batman cards as they are shuffled. Hit the correct ones to reveal them. The only trick we can give you is to try not to focus on an individual card. Instead, relax your sight and watch the entirety of the shuffle unfold. Words for us, at least.

Crystal Denfense

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (9)

In this mode, you will ride a tiny tank and shoot down the drones attempting to damage the crystal. Up and down on the analogue stick will aim your cannon. Both the attack and special buttons will fire the cannon. There are two pieces of advice you need to know before you get started..

  1. The enemies holding TNT will need to get all the way to the crystal to damage it. The drones that aren't holding TNT can shoot the crystal from farther away (but for less damage).
  2. If you see the golden bullet pickup, avoid it! This will give you the machine gun and it is WAY worse than the standard cannon shot. All the other weapons are solid.

Just get a feel for the game, keep the above advice in mind, always have a shot charged, and you'll do fine.

Jump Rope

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (10)

This one is simple... just jump over the rope. You can cheese it by choosing a flying character, like the Iron Giant.

Everything You Need To Know About Rewards

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (11)

There are two types of reward in the Rift mode. The first type is earned by fulfilling certain requirements in each mission. You will be able to preview these requirements before the mission, and during a mission you can pause to see them as well. Completing a bonus objective will earn you a reward shard. These reward shards will help fill the reward tracker in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Once you hit specific benchmarks, you will then unlock another treasure!

The second type is the Daily Reward. These will only be available in the rift marked with the Daily Reward badge. Make sure to clear these out when you see them.

MultiVersus - Complete Guide To Rifts (12)

The Rift mode is also how you will unlock agent Smith. You will need to defeat 20 bosses. The boss is the final fight of each rift (though Rift Detectives has two bosses if you own the T-Shirt variant for Garnett). Thankfully, when you complete the same rifts on the different difficulties, each final encounter will count toward this total. For more information, read our guide on unlocking Agent Smith here.
